Just Received a New Recall Letter From Triumph ( S4 Alarm )

Just today I received a recall letter from Triumph regarding the OEM Datatool S4 alarm system which I have installed on mt TTSE. Apparently corrosion can form on the circuit board allowing the alarm to shut the engine off while in motion, increasing the risk of a crash.

This was highlighted in the Forum 11 MONTHS AGO ( ! ) here :

    IMPORTANT ! Triumph Datatool S4 Alarm - RECALL !

I'm amazed ( and a little concerned ) that it has taken Triumph so long to contact their customers !

I received a recall letter from BMW about replacing leaking fuel pump flange a year after I traded it in on the Trophy.  The dealer was replacing the flanges as I was trading in the bike.  And the leaking flanges were a known problem for at least 2 years before that.  So... 4 years to fix a problem where the bike could catch on fire.  You can tell I lost my faith with that marque long ago.

My alarm failed for that reason and I wasn't happy that the dealer did not contact me about the recall notice which I hadn't seen elsewhere.

.... the Recall was issued by DataTool, who make the Alarm, on 20 January 2017.

We don't know for sure when Triumph were informed of this
but it's reasonable to assume it would have been around the same time.

The information was posted on this Forum just 7 days after the Recall notice was issued by DataTool !

Although it IS possible to buy the alarm and fit it yourself ( I did ),
DataTool recommend it is fitted by a Triumph Dealer, and most are fitted this way.

The Dealers / Triumph know, or should know, which bikes they have fitted the alarms to,
and it does seem odd that with such potentially serious consequences, it has taken
so long for Triumph to make contact with the owners of bikes they have fitted this alarm to.

The failed unit removed last year from my Sprint wasn't part of the recall but I've always wondered if the 'failure' was due to a failed 'internal battery'.  The symptoms started during the summer of 2016 with the instruments, starter, etc. not functioning after parking for short periods on hot days.  Didn't happen every time but often enough to throw up the proverbial 'red flag'.  Datatool recommended I stop riding the bike until the unit was replaced (or removed) as it would fail completely at some point, which it did this past spring and out it came.  Just noticed Triumph dropped the prices on the units (U.S. website) and I'm entertaining installing a new unit on my Sprint - my Trophy had one installed prior to delivery last summer.

Rfeer to this other Topi c:
    IMPORTANT ! Triumph Datatool S4 Alarm - RECALL !

You will know if you have the Alarm ( which was an optional accessory )
as you will have an additional Remote Fob with buttons to arm and disarm it.

    Cheers  :821:
