    Cold weather observation

It was 25-28⁰ F this morning, on my daily 20 mile commute.  It appears that my TTSE wasn't completely happy with being out in the cold...  Music over the speakers from my phone via Bluetooth, had oscillating volume - low/high during the whole trip.  The phone was in my pocket under cold weather pants and was kept warm.  During the last few miles the digital speed indication, which I have at the top of the center display, blanked out - replaced by three dashes.  The analog indicator still appeared to be correct.  Outside of that, everything appeared to be running just fine.  Just one of those things - I anticipate everything being back to normal later today.

Yesterday it was a couple of degrees warmer and I had no issues.

Sometimes, when it's around 30⁰ F, or so, the windscreen doesn't want to cooperate until the bike warms up.  It acts like the low/high limits are narrowly placed right in the middle of the normal travel of the screen; separated by a couple of inches  - this time no issue with it, though.

The digital speedo goes out below 30 degree F. This is just a quirk of the programming. Apparently Triumph never thought anyone would ever ride at those temperatures. When the bike reads a higher temp it will come back. I have ridden in temps as low as 10 degree F this week and that is the only issue I have had. No issue with radio / cell phone / bluetooth. I have an I-phone interfaced with TTSE and a Scala G9 headset.

Maybe so, but I've ridden multiple times with an indicated temperature of less than 30⁰ F over the past couple of years and it's the first time I've seen it occur.  There are probably more variables involved - perhaps humidity level...?

The speedo readout issue is fairly common and there doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason why sometimes it works in the cold and sometimes it doesn't.  Mine does it occasionally.

The Owner's Handbook ( Page 40 ) doesn't specify the actual temperature, but states :

    Digital Speed Display.
The digital speedometer displays the current speed in the selected units (mph or km/h).
At low temperatures, this function will become disabled and "- - -" will be shown on the display.

Yup- the digital display sometimes works and sometimes does not when it is cold.  Just a thing.  At least you have a speedo gauge to look at.

I have had no issues and am on winter number two with the TTSE.  Runs fine cold or hot.  Coldest I have ridden this bike is low 20's though.

Yep, it's only happened twice on mine during the two years or so of ownership.
I don't get it, I'm assuming that it uses the same pickup sensor as the analogue gauge, if that works when it's freezing then it's still getting the signal.

OK,  if it's to do with the actual display, how comes the rest of it still works when it's cold??

It doesn't make sense,....more and more bikes just have a digital display panel, do these riders end up with no speedo showing when it's cold?? If so these units are not fit for purpose.

    Picture that scenario...

LEO: Do you know how fast you were going?

Rider:  Uh..., matter-of-fact officer - uh, no, not really.  Does "---" show up in a velocity equivalency table?   :187:

    Or...

Rider: Uh..., oh, about 28⁰ F, officer.  :190:
