What is the opinion of puncture repairs to motorcycle tyres?

Had a puncture at the weekend, a small shard of metal. Managed a roadside repair to get me home but now wondering if a professional puncture repair or new tyre is in order?

The puncture is smack on the centre line so well away from the side wall. The tyre only has 1,600 miles so barely scrubbed!

    And discuss!  :183:

I would always choose riding around pieces of metal thus avoiding punctures !
If it was on the back I wouldn't hesitate having it repaired, on the front I think I might if I had confidence in the person repairing I would probably ask him if he would if it was his bike.

Yes, given the option I would avoid metal too!

When I say this was a small shard I do mean small! Around 10mm long, 4 or 5mm wide and only a mm or so thick!

    It is the rear tyre.

Have it plugged dude get the most out of what tread is left. Perfectly acceptable repair and safe.  :028: :028:

I will take him in tomorrow to my local tyre fitter and get them to plug it..

Really would hate to have to scrap a tyre with so few miles on it!

The proper way to fix a motorcycle tire is with a mushroom plug for a tubeless tire. You must take the tire off and have the plug installed from the inside. You all so loose one or more speed ratings I do think. Automotive plugs that you install from the outside with the tire still on the bike are only for emergency use. IE to get you going on the side of the road to next shop to fix or change the tire.

Me I would replace the tire front or back as your life depends on it

I recently caught a nail in the rear tire, right in the center. Dealership would not repair. I have had rear tires repaired before and was fine. Wouldn't repair a front tire.

A front tire I would have professionally plugged and inside patched or replace it.  A rear tire I've been very successful with plugging using the gooey rope plugs and run till it needs replaced.  I've had the tire mushroom plugger plugs fail and those CO≤ cartridges are worthless.  Get a Slim 12VDC compressor. This based on my experience of 4 repairs 1 front, 3 rear.
    Best regards; Art
