Month long trip across continent looking for suggestions

Hello , me and my wife are going on a month long trip across the continent ( each on our own bike ) in September . The plan is to takeoff from Québec , head to Sault-Ste-Marie , head to Oshkosh then Sioux Falls , Mount Rushmore , Yellowstone Park , Salt Lake City , San Francisco ( 2 days there ) , down Highway 1 to Los Angeles then ROUTE 66 back to Chicago and home .

BTW if we add last year's trip which was Québec -tour Newfoundland and back , we will have gone to the furthest point east of North America and further west ...all this on the  Trophy and her Honda.

Now I did look up must see stuff but nothing beats personal recommendations on routes , attractions ( both must see and avoid) , hotels and restaurants etc etc

    Thanks in advance!!

    Mike and MJ

Hyw 1 from San Francisco awesome I have made that trip a few times.  I would cut out before LA I don't recommend going there unless you like to sit in traffic. Solvang is a cool town probably a good place to end your hwy 1 part.   Make sure hwy 1 is open I thought it was closed for the rest of the year.    https://www.nepenthe.com/  is a good place to eat if you want a view.  Hearst castle is a good stop to check out the visitor center although I didn't really like the tour.  They had a movie there to watch on how it was made that was a lot better than the tour.  I am going to yellowstone in a couple months.  Beartooth Hwy is supposed to be one of the best roads in the U.S.  I hope you have a place to stay I tried to book 9 months in advance and they had no cabins available so I am camping.  I would also check out Tetons and Jackson Hole.  If your going from Salt Lake to San Fran stop at Lake Tahoe

I can vouch for the Beartooth Highway and the road leading up to it and from it I've done it a couple of times and I still want to go back

    Hi Mike and MJ,

Sorry I can't give you any useful information for your trip.   Not a part of the world I'm familiar with I'm sorry to say.

However, I can, and do, wish you a enjoyable and successful trip.  Looking forward to seeing the photos and reading the report.  Who knows, I might get over to do the same trip myself one day.  I can dream....

Rt 66 is nice to say "We did it" but you will miss some unique scenery in SW Utah as well as CO.  I would not miss the Black Canyon of the Gunnison along US 50 east of Montrose CO as well as numerous roads in that State such as US 550 from Durango to Montrose or from Cortez north.  Of cource that is all off your planned route.  Enjoy, whatever route you take.  Have great and safe trip.

By the way, if you decide to do the "Gunnison" be sure and take the South Portage road to the floor of the canyon, spectacular!

I completely agree with this.  Nothing great to me about 66.  I would rather do the million dollar highway then black canyon of gunnison. and the South Portage road is a cool road, very steep curvy road to the canoyon floor.
