Talk me into or out of a Givi V47 topcase or Trophy Topcase.

Okay, I am looking at the Givi V47 and the Trophy cases. The Trophy case is hard to get and has had some iffy reviews reguarding leaks. The V47 costs about the same but is not a factory option.
Some of the reasons for the topcase. Back rest option for my little girls, slimmer profile, extra space during touring.
Some of the concerns. Catches the wind, weight high and to the rear, waterproof, electrical connections.

    I vote for neither.
Having had my share of touring motorcycles with top cases, I came to dislike the added bulk and weight up high, affecting the center of gravity, and making it more difficult to get on and off the bike. These days I mostly use a soft dry bag for camping gear on the luggage rack. You may discover that a properly loaded dry bag makes just as good a passenger backrest as what is often affixed to a top box.

I agree with you there, but try to explain that to my Lovely Bride. I have a couple of different dry bags that I prefer but she wants a hard mount back rest for the girls.
I would not mind a alum luggage rack with a hard mount back rest and the ability to strap one of my drybags down to that.

I have the Givi 47 top case on my Trophy and love it.  I don't notice any difference in weight with the top on or off as I mostly carry a laptop and rain gear in it.  I personally think it looks nicer than the OEM top case because it's less bulky.

I personally like the factory top case mainly for the interior power socket to charge my iPhone or GoPro periodically if I'm on an all day ride. Admittedly the shape of the factory top case isn't optimal for storage space but for me it's sufficient.

I do like the shape of many of the Givi cases but since I was able to get the factory top case when I bought the bike I didn't consider getting anything else.

If you're having a hard time finding the factory top case then I wouldn't hesitate to get a Givi instead. May even want to consider a larger 52 liter one. Many of their cases allow you to install a backrest pad as well although I personally don't trust any sport touring top case as a back rest. They just don't have the mounting hardware like the big tourers (thinking of my old Victory Cross Country Tour) to support any real weight for any significant length of time.

I don't have any experience with the Givi, but the Triumph case has served me well.  I use the inner bag, too, on longer trips, and carry it with me inside the motels at night.  I also utilize the space above the inner bag as an 'attic' to store light things such as a hat, a light jacket or sweatshirt, etc.  And the elastic strap from the case tucks under the lid of the inner bag (unzipped) so it opens when you open the hard case lid (I hope I explained that well enough)...  Anyway, I'm sure either will work fine.

I have both top boxes, Triumph box on my Trophy and the Givi box on my Triumph Tiger. I like the Triumph box the best, because of the electric outlet, bigger, and the fact it can be opened with out the key. Put an electric outlet in the Givi box, but still can’t get it open without the key. My vote is for Triumph box, but it cost twice as much as the Givi.

Don't have experience with the Trophy topcase; thought it cost too much when I purchased the Trophy even though it functions and looks really nice.  Currently have a Givi E55 Maxia III Monokey Top Case mounted on the Givi E251 Universal Monokey Top Case Adapter Plate.  This is an older model Givi purchased 2016 when the Trophy was acquired.  I also installed the Admore Lighting light kit that gives the topcase integral stop/turn/brake lighting - works perfectly to provide an additional set of rear lighting higher on the bike.  (Previously, had a Givi (46 liter?) box on a Honda NT700 and another on an even older bike.) Photos attached.

Have found the Givi topcases to be decently made, durable, water-tight and adaptable - all at a reasonable price point.  Fits both my and my wife's Nolan modular helmets inside at the same time if needed.   Thought about wiring in a power outlet, but decided it really wasn't needed for my purposes.
