    Is this normal?

Went for a ride today in 26 degrees heat and nice and sunny... lovely. After about 20 minutes my left ankle started to get very hot. I usually wear calf length boots but today I was wearing ankle boots so I thought that was probably why I was feeling the heat. I stopped about half an hour later and felt this cover (picture below) and it was red hot. As it is by the Shaft drive I felt that as well and that was red hot too! Is this normal or do I have a problem?

Can't seem to get the photo to upload but the cover is the round one just by the left hand side footpeg.

26 degrees F or C?  I never put my hand on it, or felt it on my ankle. Every thing I wear is ankle height. I will have to check this week.

I normally wear full boots for riding, but due the warm weather here, I work my ankle boot's, and my left ankle was stinging a little from the heat, so I guess it's normal.

Sounds like the right-angle tranny output to the driveshaft.  It should be engine-oil hot, not RED hot, as, to the best of my knowledge it is lubricated by engine oil.  Checked that lately??
You should be able to touch it but probably not for too long.  I've never done that, but being an ex-BMW-owner I frequently check the final drive temp and that's how that is.
worst case might be bearings and/or gears going in the right angle drive???

I was riding in Germany last week - all day at 36 deg c.  I felt the heat on my left ankle and inside leg as well !
