    Mysterious Blank Screen
    on: Nov 19, 2019, 09.22 pm

    Hi guys,

The following has happened to me several times over the past 2 years, but it seems to not happen twice in a row, which makes it difficult to detect and describe, but I'll do my best:

Sometimes, when I start the bike, the screen will go blank for a second or two, after which the bike will either start or not. If it doesn't, it seems like I have to let it sit for a few minutes before trying again.

Sometimes when this happens, but not always, my settings (TES, number of riders), the trip counters, and the clock will reset.

This has never happened while I'm riding, only when I start the bike. It only happened about half a dozen times over the last 2 years, but the last one was today as I was returning from the shop (new tires and brake-pads  :002:)...

Any thoughts on what might be wrong and how to fix it?  :084:

The first thing I would do is update the software of the PBX.

Any dealer can update you with the Triumph machine.

We are somewhat away, if not (I could update it myself.)

If it is not solved, it could be one of the two connectors that enter the frame, which has some of its dirty dust connectors and does not make good contact.

Finally and I don't believe it! It could be the control unit tes. (T2057559).

    nb101,

I can't recall anyone else reporting this problem.

I think digital may have mis-interpreted your Message.
By "screen" I understand that to be the Instrument Panel Display Screen,
and the not the Wind screen.

I've read your explanation but don't fully understand the order of what happens.

At what point does the Screen go blank - is it AFTER the engine has been started,
and then the engine stops as the Screen goes blank, does it Blank out AFTER completing the
Speedo & Tacho "sweep", or does it go Blank when the Starter Button is pressed,
an the engine does not then start ?

The first thing I would check is to see if there are any Diagnostic Trouble Codes ( DTC's  )
stored in the ECU, the next time your start the bike.  If there are none, do the same again
immediately after the fault presents itself.  The reason for doing so is that many DTC's are
only retained in Memory for a certain number of "No Fault" starts, before they are erased :

To access the Diagnostic Trouble Codes Screen :

    1.  Ignition OFF
    2.  Press and hold in the Scroll UP and "i" buttons together.
( Fiddly to do - use the Thumb and forefinger of your left hand ! )
    3.  Keep the buttons pressed in, and turn the Ignition ON ( with your other hand ! )
    4.  Keep the buttons pressed in until the Speedo and Tacho needles have finished their sweep -
the Diagnostics Screen should then appear and you can let go of the buttons.
    5.  "P0000" displayed means there are no DTC's stored.
    6.  Use the Scroll buttons if there are multiple DTC's.
    7.  Make a note of, or Photograph and DTC's
    8.  Refer to the downloadabe document at the end of Post Reply #9 in this Topic :
Servicing Data, Reference Info. & DTC ( Fault ) Codes for an explanation of any DTC's found.

Other things to check are :

Make sure the two multi connectors are firmly inserted into the back of the Instrument Panel.
They should positively "click" and latch into the sockets.

Check the Main Battery connections are clean and tight - at the Battery terminals,
and also the Negative Earth / Ground cable where it attaches to the Frame.

If this only happens when the engine is actually cranking over as the Starter Motor is operating,
then also check the heavy duty cable connections at the Starter Solenoid ( just forward of the
Battery ) and at the Starter Motor.

This could also be related to the Ignition Switch Wiring Fault that has been
extensively discussed here : Ignition Switch Wiring Failures.

    Cheers  :821:

If coconut, I understood that it is the instrument screen, that's why I said of the two harnesses that go to the instrument screen.

Thank you, gentlemen. Your help is greatly appreciated  :001:

First, let me confirm that by Screen I indeed mean the Instrument Panel Display Screen.

The screen seems to "flicker" as the engine gets started and well after the Speedo & Tacho sweep...

I went ahead and checked for DTC stored (thank you for the very clear instructions, as I have zero mechanical skills) and indeed one is stored - P1698.

According to the document you referred me too (thank you again), the issue is "5 Volt sensor supply circuit malfunction".

Any suggestions on what to do next?   :086:

digital - No Problem - I was getting confused by your comments of "two connections to the frame".
I can't see how the Part you refer to ( T2057559 - TES Power Control Module ) would affect
the Instrument Panel Display Screen in the manner that has been described though ?

nb101 : DTC P1698 occurs if there are certain faults within the circuit supplying the
MAP Sensor, Ambient Pressure Sensor and Fall Detection Switch.

However, while I have seen numerous reports from members finding this DTC,
none of them related to actual faults with the Sensor circuit, or Sensors,
and all appeared to have been as a result of Low Voltage issues - mainly due to faulty Batteries,
but also as a result of the Battery being simply disconnected, or its Voltage has been allowed
to drain "too low", for example if the Ignition has been left  switched ON
without the engine running for a prolonged period.

If that has happened, the DTC can generally be ignored, and once the Battery has been recharged
or replaced,  this particular DTC will be erased from the ECU Memory after 40 "No Fault" starts,
or can be cleared by a Dealer, or by using an after market device such as DealerTool.

The presence of this DTC together with the problems with your Instrument Panel Display,
strengthen my suspicion that there is a problem with the Main Battery wiring,
or possibly the Battery itself, so I recommend proceeding with checking the connections
as previously advised, and also seeing if you can have the Battery professionally tested,
    then replaced if necessary.

    Cheers  :821:

I still say that it would be ideal to verify the status with the Triumph tool or as coconut says with Dialertool.

I think Coconut it on the right track here. I recall having this error message just before my original battery died. I replaced it with a Li Fe battery, problem solved. (Plus cranks much better and several pounds lighter)
