    DIY cam chain tensioner replacement

    Hi Braintrust....

    Have looked here and on the WWW and can't see any write up on replacing the CCT. Mine is now taking a minute or 2 to settle down from the rattle. Had service done 3000k ago and usual short rattle then but is getting worse. Kicker is Triumph Australia have none in stock (3-6 week wait) so in the process of sourcing elsewhere. Bike has done 19000ks

    Is the replacement relatively straight forward with no fancy tools. Any assistance would be appreciated...
    If I end up doing this myself I'll probably do a "how too..."

    Mine, at 60k miles, is still taking less than a minute to settle down after a hot start off the sidestand.
    So sometime, in the future, I'll probably be doing a chain & tensioner replacement.
    As you do yours, a diy thread will be appreciated(by me) as a good prep...

    Good question,... you need a Triumph tool to fit in place of the tensioner and a 0.6Nm torque wrench to check/adust the cam chain timing, if that's already been done, then I'm guessing that you could just swap the tensioner for a new one??

    To replace only the tensioner, no special Triumph tools are needed, nor any other.

    Remove the old tensioner and put on the new one.

    The torque limiter T3880609 and the tensioner T3880607 will only be necessary if the camshaft adjustment is made.

    The only thing to keep in mind is to follow the instructions in the workshop manual. Since the piston must not be released before installation and drained from engine oil in order to place the plunger on the first tooth of the cogwheel.

    Hi Digital....

    My understanding and reading of the releasing spring and draining oil is when you are replacing the original after inspection. Setting it back to its default setup.

    I suppose my question is.... If you are not needing to do an inspection is removing the cam chain cover, adjusting to TDC and using the locking pin redundant and is a simple external swap all that is required.

    My logic and interpretation is that a swap out is do-able as all of the internals are being left static.

    Pohm66, you have the genuine workshop manual? There's a bit about turning the engine anti clockwise a bit after installing the tensioner,....that makes the chain hit the plunger and pop out. I don't know how crucial that step is but personally I would set engine to TDC first.
    Turning engines backwards for longer than necessary always makes me cringe.
