Title: Plastic Gas Tank Insert in 2013 Trophy SE
Post by: BSA350Gold on March 27, 2013, 10:13:46 PM
My US model 2013 Triumph Trophy SE has a New, and I might add not improved, plastic insert that will not allow a Gas Nozzle to be fully inserted into the Fuel Tank.  (I don't understand the reasoning behind this, but there must be one).

If I am fueling at a gas station in Texas that has a Vapor return bezel, I have to get my hands full of fuel to hold it back so the fuel will flow.  If I am lucky enough to get a pump without the bezel, then I just get to splash gas all over my new paint on the tank and fairing.

I know in the new Triumph 1200 Explorer, it has a plastic insert in the fuel fill that can be gently removed with a pair of long needle nose pliers.

Why is it in there, and more importantly can it be removed?

I am including a picture of my fuel fill with the gas cap open.

I was amazed how difficult it was to fill the tank the first time I tried too.  I have been considering one of the adapters for motorcycle gas tanks. Here is a link. There are others as well. I just hate the idea of having to carry this around with me!

I have found that the best way is to place the nozzle vertically into the tank and squeeze until I see a small splash. This works for me.

First time I did it I got petrol all over the place but second time holding the nozzle vertically it filled perfectly, I think the tank has something like that gadget in the neck already, it is just a case of holding the pipe vertically.

Same for me. Just hold pipe vertical and allow nozzle to rest on the cone in the tank and it will fill perfectly :028:

Sounds great....BUT... Here in the Republik of Kalifornia our all powerful and all knowing leaders passed a law that requires a vapor hose that surrounds the filler and has to be pushed back but it can't because of plastic insert. I have to place my hand over the tank opening and press the now unsealed vapor hose up so the gas will turn on. What a pain in the rear.
